Throughout your journey, different memories surface to give you reminders or insights on actions that you might take. If you let these consistently consume you, then you’ll miss out on the beauty of the present moment.
Every single moment of the past made you who you are today. Reflect for a moment how you might feel about yourself. What are some of the first thoughts that wonder through your mind about yourself. Does it make you smile? Does it make you proud? Do you enjoy being who you are right now? Are there certain areas about you that you really enjoy or love? How often are you in those areas of strengths and passions? Have you considered how those became your favorite areas? Some of these could be physical attributes, intangibles, non-physical attributes, characteristics that you acquired from your friends or family or through other means.
For these areas that are enjoyable to you, do you ever complain, regret, or bemoan those abilities? Has your success or enjoyment of those skills been something that you dwelled upon in a negative manner? They might have opened up different areas of your life that you might not have even paid attention to. This might have led you to a moment that you haven't forgiven yourself for.
Are there certain areas that you are indifferent to about yourself? How often do you ignore or not even notice those things in your reality? And what about the areas that you might not notice since they are common or you’ve known them your entire life? Has a compliment or comment ever stood out about something that you never focused on or noticed? It could be as simple as the way you smile, the way you think, or the way that you say certain words or phrases. These things that may seem common to you might be the one thing that truly differentiates you from someone else.
There are many other skills that you have that may be a consistent part of your life that others wished that they could do. Some skills include listening, cooking, teaching, or even telling the truth. When you’re listening, are you listening to truly hear another person or are you listening to respond? When it comes to cooking, are you making food to survive or are you creating something new that brings you an opportunity for creativity? For teaching experiences, are you teaching a person so they can grasp the idea for short-term reasons or are you teaching them how to figure it out for the rest of their lives? As for telling the truth, are you direct, bold, open to giving and receiving feedback or are you repeating the reality that you have been presented or researched?
Are there certain areas that you loathe about yourself or dislike about yourself? How often are you focused on those areas that you might not enjoy so much? Have you wondered why you don't enjoy those areas so much? Is it because you don’t like them or because someone else doesn’t like it about you? How much of their perspective of reality shapes yours? How much does someone else's opinion matter to your reality? And how do you discern who matters to you or not? Is it their degrees, their status, how official-sounding they might be, how much value that you place on them, or other details?
With any of these areas, one slight change would make the difference in who you are today. If you had been focused on a different area, then you might not have slowed down, sped up, or maintained the same pace of your reality. Oftentimes, you have many blessings in disguise. You never know what you would have avoided or what opportunities arose because you were at the right place at the right moment with the right people.
Remember that you have many choices that you can make. Remember that you can take ownership over those choices as well. Consider this question: do you want to enjoy being who you are right now? That self-motivation for anything will continue to transform your incredible adventure. How can you enjoy this current moment with your entire being if you're focused on other different moments from the past?
